Nora wanted to scream with frustration. She’d fought so hard to go home when the doctors wanted to send her to a rehab facility. Sometimes sharp pains shot up her leg with such intensity that she could barely think, and she kept whanging her foot into things because she couldn’t steer the stupid wheelchair, but no one offered to help. Not even her sister. In an immense stroke of irony, Haven had escaped without a single broken bone, and she didn’t seem to care one bit about the fact that her older sister had gotten injured trying to rescue her. She hadn’t even said thank you.

That rankled, but Nora had handled it. She endured the pain. She dealt with the fact that she might only make the final performance of the dance season, and even that wasn’t guaranteed. She watched as the team performed the routine she’d been practicing all summer without her, and she hadn’t complained at all. But now, instead of the Nicki Minaj track she’d picked, Tank was once again playing the same twisted music that she heard in her dreams, a sing-song almost-chant with a heavy beat, like a bunch of Gregorian monks had decided to get a little gangster. She’d thought he learned his lesson, but apparently not if he thought it was okay to prank his best friend while her world fell down around her.

Now he gave her that lopsided aw-shucks smile, pretending he was playing the right track. He must have gotten the rest of the squad to go in on the joke this time, because they acted like nothing was wrong. She’d tried to ignore it at first, hoping he’d switch back to their real music, but the chant grated on the edge of her awareness like a fly that kept buzzing around her head. It wormed its way into her head, and she kept humming along despite her best efforts to resist. If Tank gave her a Gregorian earworm, he was going to be in a lot of trouble.

“Sorry about the track,” he said. “You restarted so fast that I didn’t have time to cue the right one up. I’ll get it right next time. Promise.”

He flashed her a smile that she didn’t return. The expression faded as he slowly began to realize that she was really and truly pissed.

“So you admit that this is the wrong track?” she demanded.

“Yeah, I shouldn’t have played the explicit version. Look, I’m sorry. You know I wouldn’t do that on purpose. I don’t play pranks like that anymore.”

She wheeled closer. “It isn’t even English,” she snapped. “Just like the last time.”

Tank looked perplexed. The liar. “What?”

“This isn’t funny. Put on the real music and let’s get to work.”

“Look, fine. I’ll switch the track.”

Tank pushed a button, and the gym fell into blessed silence. Then he pushed another one, and the chant started up again. Nora wanted to pull her hair out. She didn’t need this trickery on top of everything else that stressed her out.
